The Wage Shop

Holy Crepe – it’s Pancake Day! We thought we’d share some ideas – some child friendly, some not so much! After all, kids, kitchens and cooking isn’t always the most relaxing combination.

Pancakes are really easy to make – it’s a simple recipe that’s quick to mix and cook, chuck some Nutella on there and hey presto – happy kids! You can even buy Pug and Unicorn pans from Asda to really create some masterpieces. It’s a chance to get the kids involved in cooking and creating their own designs.

What about something to wash those delicious snacks down with? For the kids and non-drinkers, why not try an orange flip to go with your pancakes? You’ll need 10cl orange juice, 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of honey. Put the ingredients in a blender and mix well. Serve over ice. A refreshing treat, without the hangover.

But, what about the adults – after the kitchen has been cleaned and the kids are in bed, what about some recipes just for the adults? You can buy Lemon G&T sauce from M&S – of course, only M&S! Ideal for topping those pancakes. What about more adult friendly drinks? We’d never heard of pancake cocktails before, but you can pretty much turn anything into a cocktail if you try hard enough! Believe me, it’s possible!!

Gin is still really popular at the moment, so there’s a few recipes you could try, but a Flip can be made with pretty much any booze along with egg and sugar, sometimes cream.

The Classic Flip is made with 60ml gin, 15ml simple syrup, 1 whole egg and 15ml double cream. Add all the ingredients to the shaker and shake well. Add ice and shake again. Strain into a glass, and if you’re feeling festive, grate a bit of nutmeg over the top. Drink and enjoy!

What about a Champagne Flip? You’ll need ¾ oz of brandy, 3 dashes of orange liqueur, ¼ oz cream, ¼ oz sugar syrup, 1 egg, 4oz champagne. Put all the ingredients except the champagne in a shaker with ice and mix well. Strain over your champagne flute and add the champagne. Sprinkle nutmeg over the top and drink.

If you’re serving your pancakes with chocolate, what about a nice chocolate and coffee cocktail to wash it down with? You’ll need 40ml Cognac, 25ml chocolate liqueur, 20ml espresso and 20ml Fresh lemon juice. Shake all the ingredients vigorously over ice in a cocktail shaker and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with coffee beans and grated dark chocolate.

All sounds like fun, until someone gets burned, or too drunk to go to work the next day! Whatever your plans for Pancake Day, drink responsibly, have fun and don’t burn the house down!
