The Wage Shop

Joining the family business for some may seem to be an easy decision to make or viewed as an easy job, but this isn’t always the case.

There are always pros and cons like with anything else in life.  Make sure the decision you make is right for you and not just the family.  Only you are responsible for your own happiness and wellbeing and will know deep down if you want to take that step into the family business.

If you feel you don’t want to join right away but you don’t want to completely rule it out.  There may always be the option to further down the line, obviously this would be something that all involved would have to decide on.  It is said that getting some real-world experience prior to joining the family business will help give you greater understanding of being an employee which will help with the employees of the family business and how they feel over certain decisions made within the company and how they feel about coming to work. You will gain greater respect from them as you will be able to reassure them that you understand their views and feelings having worked in the real-world yourself.  Plus, it also demonstrates to your family and colleagues that you can stand on your own two feet and that you do have something to offer.

Another thing to consider is – have any of the family relationships been affected due to the business?

Family members may not always get on at home, but those feelings must be left at the front door.  You need to know that any business decisions that have been made so far have been based on what is best for the company and personal feelings have not swayed any decisions.  You may wish to ask them if this has ever occurred and do they think your relationship with them could withstand the pressure of working together?  It a perfectly reasonable question to ask and you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable in asking it, after all if you do join there will be on occasions questions that will need asking however awkward they may feel but it may be part of your job to ask them.

Finding out what the future plans for the business are, is also an important part of your decision.  You need to know your position within the business will keep you motivated and challenged for the foreseeable future.  You need to understand what the company’s long-term projection is to keep it relevant and productive, so that you know that you can give it the right help to support its continued success.

Whatever decision you come to, take pride in your career and be your best!!
