The Wage Shop

How old is too old to work?

With the retirement age ever raising, people in the UK are having to spend longer than ever in their careers.

Most of us dream of retiring in our late 50’s or early 60’s, unfortunately for a lot of us, this is all but a dream.

There is legislation in place to protect workers from age discrimination.  Although there is no legal retirement age, and employers can no longer force their employees to take retirement at a certain age.  That decision remains with you when you decide to stop work. Staying in work longer and taking control of when you retire can give you more money as well as benefit your health and wellbeing.

However, there are exceptions in some situations where an employer can make you take retirement.  These are maybe due to the nature of the job, if it requires a certain level of mental or physical ability or has age limit set by another law.

If you do find yourself in the unemployment market in your 50’s or over, fear not. There is plenty of help and advice out there, when it comes to seeking the right career or employer for you.

Do not be deterred by IT skills. If you feel that you need to improve your computer skills or need to refresh them you could always contact your local library, enrol in a few evening classes or maybe a younger friend or member of the family could help you with this?  If you are not already, make yourself aware of social media or try it out.  By showing that you use social media platforms it will show regardless of age that your using or have knowledge of the latest technology.

Make sure you have your CV up to date.  Try not to cram your life’s work history, as some of your past employment may not be relevant.  Try keeping it to a couple of pages and list maybe your last 10 -12 years employment, that is more than adequate for any future employer.

If in doubt over anything there is plenty of help online and even your local Job Centre can provide some helpful guidance.

Another way of filing the gap between one employment to the next is temporary work.  This can help keep your finances ticking over and keep you motivated in seeking full time employment.

You should keep in mind that quite a few people find fulltime employment via temporary work.  Several employers find this a more proactive way of finding full time employees.

Remember you have all that work history and life experience to offer!!
